What STOL STOP collects, why, who helps us run the site, and the choices you have. Short version: we collect little, we do not sell it, and you can delete your account any time.
Effective: October 18, 2026.

What we collect
If you just browse
You can read every page, search the directory and use the map without an account. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, handles the technical details every website sees, such as your IP address and browser type, to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse. We do not use advertising trackers or analytics cookies.
If you join as a member
Joining is free and has no password. We store:
- your email address;
- your first name and home province, if you give them (both are optional);
- the provinces you follow;
- your email preferences: new-event alerts and the occasional newsletter;
- a record of your consent: the date, the exact wording you agreed to, and a one-way hash of your IP address. We never store the raw IP address for this;
- the places and events you save;
- when you last signed in.
To sign in we email you a 6-digit code. The code expires after 15 minutes, and we keep only a scrambled (hashed) form of it, not the code itself.
If you send us something
When you use the listing form or the contact form, we store what you type (such as your name, email address, the listing details or your message) along with a hashed IP address. The hash helps us spot abuse and spam, and it cannot be turned back into your IP address. Listings are reviewed by hand before they go live. If you put contact details into the listing text itself, they will be public once the listing is approved. We do not publish your email address without your permission.
Flyers and photos that we upload for listings are stored in Cloudflare storage and shown on the site.
Why we use it
- To run your account, sign you in and remember what you saved.
- To email you only what you asked for: sign-in codes, new-event alerts for the provinces you follow, and the newsletter if you opted in.
- To review and publish listings, answer messages and keep the directory accurate.
- To keep the site secure and stop spam.
We do not sell your information, and we do not rent or share the mailing list.
Email and consent (CASL)
We only send alerts and newsletters if you tick the matching box when you join or in your account, which is your express consent under Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL). If you tick neither box, we only email you the sign-in code. Every alert and newsletter says who it is from, includes our mailing address, and has an unsubscribe link that works in one click. You can also change your boxes at any time in your account.
Cookies
STOL STOP sets only a few small cookies, all to keep you signed in:
- ss_member: your signed-in session. It lasts 90 days or until you sign out, and it is only set after you sign in.
- ss_in: a flag that lets the header show "My account" instead of "Join". It holds no personal data.
- ss_admin: used only when the site owner signs in to manage the site. Visitors never get it.
We use no advertising cookies and no analytics cookies.
Other services your browser contacts
Some features load from other companies, so your browser talks to them directly and they see your IP address and browser details under their own privacy policies:
- Maps: map tiles from CARTO and OpenStreetMap (and Google Maps when it is switched on), with the map code loaded from unpkg.
- Google Maps embeds on place and event pages. Google may set its own cookies in these. The Go and Add to calendar buttons open Google Maps or Google Calendar only when you click them.
- Google Fonts for the site's typefaces.
- Cloudflare Turnstile or similar bot checks on our forms, when switched on.
Who helps us run the site
- Cloudflare hosts the site, the database that holds member and submission records, and the storage for uploaded flyers and photos.
- SendGrid delivers our emails, so it handles your email address and the message text for that purpose.
Access to member and submission records is limited to the site owner. [Owner to confirm: hosting regions] [Owner to confirm: retention period]
Your choices
- Update your details and preferences any time in your account.
- Unsubscribe with the link in any email, or clear the boxes in your account.
- Delete your account in your account. This removes your email, your preferences and your saved items from STOL STOP.
- Ask for access, correction or deletion of anything else, such as a message you sent through a form, by writing to us on the contact page.
