How to plan a visit to a grass airstrip

An introduction to assessing permission, official data and logistics when considering a grass strip visit.

Plan with official sources. This listing is shared by the community and is not official aeronautical information. Check the CFS and NOTAMs, get permission where it is required, and call ahead before you fly.

Educational material only: not an operational briefing. Verify all aviation information using official current sources.

Permission and access

Find the current aerodrome operator or landowner and confirm that visitors are permitted. Some strips require prior permission, and online listings cannot confer access.

Verify official aeronautical data

Consult current charts, supplements, NOTAMs, weather and other official sources. Confirm surface conditions, usable length, obstacles, operational restrictions and communications directly with the operator. Our official sources page lists where to start.

Match the aircraft to the conditions

Use your aircraft flight manual and your own training, proficiency, performance margins and personal minimums. Do not rely on a crowd-sourced website for runway suitability.

Plan a fallback

Carry sufficient fuel reserves, identify alternates and be prepared to cancel or divert. Grass strips can change quickly with rain, maintenance and seasonal conditions.
