Underwing camping: a beginner's planning guide
What to think through before a fly-in camping trip in Canada.
Plan with official sources. This listing is shared by the community and is not official aeronautical information. Check the CFS and NOTAMs, get permission where it is required, and call ahead before you fly.
Educational material only: not an operational briefing. Verify all aviation information using official current sources.
Confirm camping permission
Not every airport permits camping. Ask the owner or aerodrome manager where aircraft can park, whether camping is allowed and what facilities are available.
Plan for changing conditions
Check official forecasts and local conditions. Pack for temperature swings, bugs, rain and terrain while staying within weight-and-balance limits. If you want ideas, see Adam's underwing camping gear list.
Respect the airfield and neighbours
Follow published procedures, minimize noise, avoid blocking taxiways and protect the aircraft from weather. Follow local rules for campfires, waste and wildlife.
Leave a safe margin
Always have an alternate plan if the campsite or runway becomes unavailable. No travel guide replaces official aviation briefing and pilot decision-making.
